AN IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT REGARDING FREON AND YOUR AC
FREON BE GONE!
Since 1995, the U.S. has been in the process of phasing out the production of various industrial chemicals that have been found to damage our planet’s ozone layer. Among these is chlorodifluoromethane, also known as R-22 or Freon, which is one of the refrigerants most commonly used in air conditioning systems.
In October of 2014, the EPA announced its final phase down schedule for R-22 production, calling for an immediate drop from 51 million pounds in 2014 to 22 million pounds in 2015 to 18 million pounds in 2016, 13 million in 2017, 9 million in 2018, 4 million in 2019, and finally no new R-22 production or importation on or after January 1, 2020.
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN TO YOU?
Put simply, it means that Freon supplies are falling and falling and as a result, R-22 prices are going up and up. That means if your air conditioner uses R-22 and needs extra refrigerant because of a leak or other issue, your service charges might increase. However, don’t worry — air conditioners typically don’t run out of Freon, so you won’t need more R-22 unless there’s a leak.
