CRAWL SPACE ENCAPSULATION ISN’T BENEATH WOODFIN’S EXPERTS

crawlspaceAfter3.jpgAir leaks can cause a home to lose significant amounts of heated or cooled air. With leaks, your home is drafty and less comfortable, and your heating or air conditioning system wastes energy (and money). The U.S. Energy Star® program estimates that a knowledgeable contractor can save a homeowner 20% on energy costs by thoroughly sealing leaks in attics, crawl spaces and other hard-to-reach places.

CRAWLSPACE CONSERVATION TIPS

You can reduce drafts and save energy by following these tips for upgrading a crawlspace:

  • Inspect the crawl space for holes and gaps.
  • Focus on areas where the foundation and the frame meet and seal any gaps of less than one-quarter inch with caulk. For larger gaps, use spray foam.
  • Caulk and seal air leaks where plumbing, ducting, or electrical wiring penetrates through exterior walls.
  • After sealing, add insulation to block heat loss in winter and heat gain in summer.
  • If you discover moldy, rotted wood, call a professional.
